Munich’s Art Deco Palais [Door of the Month – March 2026]

My recent winter travels continued with a trip to Frankfurt and Munich for work. Of course, I made time for door walks in both cities. The company I work for recently rented office space in a historic building in Munich and my colleagues who know I like doors told me that I had to check it out.

A colleague shared a photo of an Art Deco door under a heavy construction scaffold. I could see that the door had good bones, but I didn’t have high hopes of finding anything super photo worthy.

It was snowing in Munich, so I once again reminded myself that there is no bad weather, just bad clothing choices and set out on a mission to see for myself.

While the rear of the building was indeed under construction, I did a lap around it and was absolutely astonished by this spectacular Art Deco door. It’s no wonder they call this building the Art Deco Palais.

Steeped in over 100 years of history, the building was the headquarters of the Oberpostdirektion (post office). At the time it was completed in 1924, the edifice was Munich’s largest administrative building and a pioneer of modernism.

The building is unique in that it sits at the intersection of Art Deco and New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) styles. While the door of the month clearly shows off the Art Deco aspects of the architecture, the building was an early example of architecture built from reinforced concrete (a hallmark of the more utilitarian and functional Neue Sachlichkeit movement).

I love the whole picture, but it was only when I zoomed in and noticed the spectacular lion knocker that I knew this would be my door of the month for March 2026. Spectacular!

The Art Deco Palais is located at Arnulfstraße 60, not far from the Munich Hackerbrücke train station.
