Traditional Wooden House in Estonia [Door of the Month]

A mid-level shot of a weathered wooden building facade with a symmetrical double door entrance. The doors feature a geometric pattern of rectangles in white, brown, and red. A metal awning with decorative wirework and hanging lights shelters the entrance. Windows flank the doors on either side, and the number "22" is visible on a plaque to the left.

In April, we return to the Baltics once again. The doors in the region are simply too memorable to highlight just once. Let’s keep this trend going!

As you may recall from last month, my motto is work to live, live to travel, travel for work.

I recently had a business trip to the Baltics and decided to spend a bleisure weekend on either end of the trip exploring the vibrant cities of Vilnius and Tallinn that I was visiting.

This month, let’s head to Tallinn, Estonia.

I spent some time exploring Balti Jaama Turg, a food hall in the Telliskivi neighborhood. This part of Tallinn is full of old warehouses and factories that are now reimagined as cafes, restaurants, and bars.

While I was sipping a craft beer at Humalakoda Pub, I was perusing Google Maps to figure out what to do with the rest of my day.

My eyes were drawn to a pin on the map that said “Street with old traditional wooden houses.” Google Maps suggested this landmark was less than a 10 minute walk away.

I was intrigued. Old traditional wooden houses suggested a high probability of unique and interesting doors! My hunch was spot on.

Over the course of that afternoon and on a return trip the next day, I took about 200 photos of colorful doors in Tallinn. If you visit Tallinn and love door photography as much as I do, a walk in this part of town is a must.

I can only imagine the stories my door of the month could tell. When traveling, you can never go wrong getting out of the tourist zone (in this case, Old Town Tallinn) and exploring further afield.

Get curious and you never know what you might find.
