We like to break up long drives with a stopover somewhere in the middle. That’s exactly what we did on our way home from Jerez, Spain last month.
In total, it takes about 6 hours to drive between Jerez and Lisbon so were looking for an interesting town situated at about the 3 hour mark.
That’s how we found Estoi. Located in the Algarve of Portugal, Estoi is a very small inland town with a cool pousada. Pousadas are hotels located in historic properties in Portugal.
Pousada Palácio De Estói features a large manor house with a sumptuous interior that has been restored to something approximating its former glory. There is a vast garden associated with the palace that is accessible in winter via a gate hidden away near the main square of this small Portuguese town.
It was as we were backtracking toward the palace through Jardim do Palácio de Estói that I spotted a spectacular fountain with two doors comprised of richly colored stained glass beyond.
I knew at that moment that this pair would be my door of the month. This photo captures the vibe of Palácio De Estói perfectly.
