Prague's Art Nouveau Hilbert House [Door of the Month]

I was absolutely wowed by the doors in Prague! I had the opportunity to spend a week in the Czech capital on a business trip for my “day job” recently. I spent hours in the mornings before work and on the weekend roaming the streets.

I was so enamored with the doors here that I’ve decided to dedicate the month of May to Prague doors. Both this Door of the Month and all the May installments of the door of the week competition will feature beautiful entrances from around Prague during different periods of the city’s history.

I’ll also be focused exclusively on Prague doors on the Doors, Glorious Doors subreddit in May. Seriously, I’m obsessed with the door scene here (doorsessed!)

So, what can I tell you about our May 2025 door of the month? This spectacular door lives on 26 Masarykovo nábř. along the River Vltava. I was tipped off about another door on this stretch of road by a member of my subreddit. While that door turned out to be very, very nice, it was this door that made be stop in my tracks.

Prague has some truly spectacular Art Nouveau architecture and Hilbert House (Hilbertův dům in Czech) is a fantastic example. Today, the building houses apartments and there is a Syrian restaurant called Damascus on the ground floor.

The Czech National Heritage Institute reports that the building dates back to 1904 or 1905 so it’s no wonder that the edifice is so unapologetically Art Nouveau.

This gorgeous turn-of-the-20th century edifice was designed by Czech architect Kamil Hilbert with period decorations by Karel Novák.

While the wider facade around the door was what caught my eye, I was simply enchanted when I went in for a closer look and decided that the tight crop was the better choice for “door of the month” honors.
