One of my top part-time travel tips is to look for flights that involve a detour but are cheaper than going directly from Point A to Point B. I needed to get from Lisbon to San Francisco for work a few weeks ago and the direct flights were eye-wateringly expensive.
I found a (much) cheaper business class ticket that required an overnight stay in Munich. Of course, I jumped at the chance to do a little door hunting on my layover. I have colleagues in Germany and put out a call for ideas of where I should go looking for interesting Munich doors.
I got a lot of excellent suggestions, but one in particular caught my eye. Schwabing is known for Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture. It took about an hour and a half to get from Munich Airport to the Schwabing neighborhood on public transportation, but it was totally worth the trip!
I did a quick search for “Jugendstil, Schwabing” and Viergeschossiges Jugendstilhaus popped right up. That’s where I set my sights originally. What I found there definitely proved to be a contender for door of the month.
However, as I was wandering around the neighborhood, I discovered a bright red apartment building door with bicycles parked out front and a stern Egyptian countenance looking down from the top of the door frame. Absolutely spectacular!
It was a tough call, but I think I made the right choice in selecting the Egyptian Jugendstil door in Munich as my November 2025 door of the month.
