Green-Tiled Door in Central Portugal

Caldas da Rainha, Portugal

Portuguese doors are some of the most distinctive in the world. This beautiful dusty green door with swirled mullion and elegant moulding caught my eye. I was immediately drawn to the bright green azulejos that would not look out of place in the National Tile Museum in Lisbon.

This door lives in Caldas da Rainha, a town of about 30,000 people in Central Portugal. Caldas’ is the historic home of the ceramics factory of Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro. Caldas’ other claim to fame are ceramics shaped like a certain part of the male anatomy…

We combined a day trip to Caldas with a visit to the Óbidos Chocolate Festival (clearly a winning combination).
