Open the Door to Beijing

Red wooden doors surrounded by a decorative red lattice. There are two red pilasters surrounding the door and a faded blue painted wooden beam above the door. There are statues of oxen in front of the door

I had the chance to visit China as part of a 6 week sabbatical in Asia. Have you dreamed of exploring Asia’s megacities? If so, then unlock the door to Beijing. While Beijing operates at a truly frenetic pace, there are pockets of tranquility.

I spotted this grand door surrounded by heavy metal oxen (or perhaps they are bulls?) in the Forbidden City in a quiet spot away from the massive onslaught of tourists.

I loved Beijing because it was actually pretty easy to get around on public transportation. Of course, we also made our way further afield via a hired guide who took us to the Great Wall of China, a true bucket list experience.

For a memorable vacation in China, Beijing is a great place to start.
