Aveiro, Portugal
A weekend in Aveiro is one of my favorite city breaks from Lisbon and also a fabulous Porto day trip. Why? The beautiful doors that you find in nearby Costa Nova are a sight to behold.
Former fishermen’s cottages known as palheiros (“haystacks”) line the beach and are decorated in bright vertical stripes.
I was drawn to this white door not only because of the red stripes, but because of that ornate escutcheon covering the door knob and lockset. Escutcheons are a key decorative element of a door’s anatomy.
