Red Door on Terceira

Close up of a red door in a stone frame on Terceira in the Azores.

Angra do Heroísmo

Terceira is a small island in the Azores of Portugal most well known for its impressive impérios (small, colorful shrines).

The main city on the island, Angra do Heroísmo, is UNESCO World Heritage rated. Why? It was an obligatory port of call for Portuguese explorers en route to the Americas from the 15th century. Did you know that the brother of Vasco de Gama died here?

Given the rich history on Terceira, it is no wonder that the island is home to some amazing doors. This red door set in a stone frame caught my eye as we were exploring the streets of Angra do Heroísmo.
